Match the seller’s measurement method and units; a size letter alone is not enough.
Identify what the numbers describe
A chart may describe the garment, a recommended body size or a flat measurement. These are different quantities. Sugargoo’s size-chart guide explains that seller charts vary and many use garment measurements in centimeters. Read the chart’s labels and diagram before comparing numbers.
For a chest or waistband measured flat, doubling the width gives an approximate circumference. Do not double a value already described as circumference. If the listing does not explain its method, ask for clarification.
Build a comparison from something that fits
Lay a similar garment flat without stretching it. Record your measurements in the same units and positions as the seller’s chart. For a jacket, use a jacket with a similar intended fit rather than a fitted t-shirt.
| Item | Measurements to compare | Extra detail to check |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirt or hoodie | Chest width, body length, shoulder and sleeve | Measurement points and intended fit |
| Jacket | Chest, shoulder, sleeve and length | Room for the layers you intend to wear |
| Pants or jeans | Waist, hip, rise, inseam or total length | Flat or circumference; relaxed or stretched |
| Shoes | The seller’s stated foot-length or insole measurement | Which measurement the chart actually uses |
Work through one example
Illustrative example: your comfortable t-shirt is 54 cm across the chest when laid flat. A listing shows a 108 cm garment chest circumference. Those values describe roughly the same chest dimension: 54 × 2 = 108.
That does not prove the shirt will fit the same. Its length, shoulder shape, sleeve cut and fabric can differ. Compare the remaining measurements and read the seller’s stated measuring tolerance. There is no universal instruction to choose one size larger.
Ask for a useful measurement photo
A vague request such as “check the size” may only confirm the printed label. Specify the dimension and ask for the tape and endpoints to be visible. Additional warehouse photography or measurement services may cost extra; confirm the current service and price first.
You can adapt this message:
Please photograph the garment laid flat with a tape across the chest, from one armpit seam to the other. Please also show body length and the size label. Do not stretch the fabric.
For shoes, confirm whether the seller’s chart means foot length or insole length before requesting a photo. A generic US/EU conversion cannot resolve an unclear chart. Keep your comparison notes with the order so you can check the warehouse results before shipping.
