Compare quotes for the same packed parcel and read each route’s billing rule.

Item weight is only the starting point

A parcel includes products and packaging. Its actual packed weight can be different from the sum of the item weights you saw earlier. Some routes also calculate volumetric weight from the outside dimensions of the box.

Sugargoo’s packing simulation guide lists different volumetric divisors for different routes. The selected line’s rules determine whether actual weight, volumetric weight or another billing condition applies. Also check minimum charges, weight increments and size limits.

Calculate a volume example

Illustrative example, not a freight quote: a box measures 40 × 30 × 25 cm and weighs 3 kg. If a line uses a divisor of 6,000:

40 × 30 × 25 ÷ 6,000 = 5 kg volumetric weight.

On a line that charges the higher of actual and volumetric weight, the starting billable weight would be 5 kg before any rounding or minimum rule. An actual-weight line could calculate it differently. Always read the rule shown for that route.

When rehearsal is useful

Sugargoo describes rehearsal shipping as packing the selected goods in advance to obtain a more informed weight and volume estimate. It can help when you have bulky packaging, several items or uncertainty about the box size. Check the current fee and scope before requesting it.

The official guide also says the final packing result can differ from the estimate, with a charge or refund for the difference. Rehearsal improves the information available; it is not a promise that the final freight payment cannot change.

Compare the same parcel across routes

Write down the following for each available line:

  • Destination and postcode used for the quote.
  • Items accepted by that route and any restrictions.
  • Packed weight, dimensions and billing method.
  • Total quoted freight, surcharges and selected services.
  • Estimated delivery range, tracking coverage and protection terms.

A low headline price is less useful if it is for a different weight or excludes an option you need. Delivery estimates also need to suit your deadline.

Choose packaging deliberately

Before removing a shoe box or other packaging, decide whether you need it for protection, storage or a potential return. Ask whether removal is suitable for the specific item. Keep required tags and packaging intact while a return is being considered.

Consolidation can avoid sending several separate boxes, but adding items changes the parcel’s size, weight and route eligibility. Compare the total revised quote rather than assuming every extra item makes shipping cheaper.
